Have you ever come across Stimson’s Pythons?
They’re quite fascinating creatures and happen to be a popular choice among first-time snake owners. These pythons go by the scientific name Antaresia stimsoni, but most people simply refer to them as Stimson’s Pythons.
Here's an interesting tidbit: Stimson’s Pythons are currently classified as "Least Concern" when it comes to their conservation status. They thrive in rocky outcrops and woodlands, enjoying meals of small mammals, frogs, birds, and lizards.
Now, let’s talk about their role at Kanyana. Jinda, one of our Stimson’s Pythons, was generously purchased and donated in 2007 to enhance our educational efforts. Brownie, another member of this species, found his way to us in 2010 after being seized by DPaW due to illegal ownership. Both Jinda and Brownie play vital roles in educating visitors about wildlife conservation and the importance of responsible pet ownership.
Next time you’re at Kanyana, be sure to say hello to Jinda and Brownie, our friendly Stimson’s Pythons!
