Check out our new Christmas Catalogue!

Did you know that Echidnas are one of the very few monotremes in the world?

This means they're egg-laying mammals! How cool is that? Their scientific name is *Tachyglossus aculeatus*, but let’s just call them Echidnas for simplicity.

Here’s an interesting fact: Echidnas are doing well in terms of conservation, listed as "Least Concern."

Echidnas can be found in all sorts of habitats, from forests to deserts. Their unique diet mainly consists of termites.

At Kanyana, we have some special Echidnas with unique stories. Take Elle, for instance—she arrived as a puggle in 1992 after being dug up from her burrow at a mining site. Then there's Aruba, who joined us in 2000 after her mother was tragically hit by a car. Both Elle and Aruba were hand-raised and have since become valuable members of our education team, helping to teach visitors about these incredible egg-laying mammals.

Next time you’re at Kanyana, be sure to meet Elle, Aruba, and our other Echidnas. They’re not just fascinating creatures; they’re also ambassadors for the wonder of monotremes in the animal kingdom!
