Ever seen an Emu up close?
These majestic birds are known for their long legs, and curious personalities!
Their scientific name is Dromaius novaehollandiae, but we’ll stick with Emu for now.
Here’s a fascinating tidbit: Emus are doing well in terms of conservation, listed as "Least Concern." You can find them in a wide range of habitats, from grasslands to forests.
When it comes to food, Emus have quite the appetite, munching on leaves, fruit, flowers, and even insects!
At Kanyana, we have a special Emu named Widgee. Born in 2003 at the Perth Royal Show, Widgee faced challenges with splayed legs that prevented him from standing. June Butcher, Kanyana’s founder, took Widgee under her wing, so to speak, and splinted his legs straight. Thanks to this treatment, Widgee has been happily living at Kanyana ever since, entertaining visitors with his cheeky antics.
Next time you’re at Kanyana, be sure to meet Widgee the Emu and marvel at these remarkable birds!
