If the animal is injured

  1. Assess the Situation: Approach the possum cautiously to assess its condition. Be mindful that possums can be frightened and defensive when injured, so approach slowly and calmly.

  2. Ensure Safety: If the possum is in a dangerous location (e.g., near a road), safely move it to a quieter and safer area nearby. Use gloves or a thick towel to handle the possum to protect yourself and avoid stressing the animal further.

  3. Containment: If possible, gently place the injured possum into a well-ventilated box or carrier lined with a soft towel or cloth. Ensure the container has enough air holes and is secure so the possum cannot escape.

  4. Keep Warm and Quiet: Keep the possum in a quiet, dark place away from pets, children, and noise. Use a heating pad or a warm water bottle wrapped in a towel (to avoid direct contact) to keep the possum warm, especially if it's cold outside.

  5. Seek Professional Help: Contact a local wildlife rescue organisation such as our team here at Kanyana Wildlife in Perth. We have the expertise and resources to provide appropriate care and treatment for the injured possum.

  6. Do Not Offer Food or Water: Do not attempt to feed or give water to the injured possum. It's best to leave this to trained wildlife carers who can assess its condition properly.

  7. Follow Advice: Follow any advice or instructions given by the wildlife rescue organization or rehabilitator. They may ask you to transport the possum to them or provide further instructions on how to care for it until help arrives.

If the animal is dead

  1. Handle with Care: Use gloves or a plastic bag to handle the possum to minimize direct contact. Possums can carry diseases or parasites, so avoiding contact with bare hands is advisable.

  2. Dispose Properly: Place the possum in a sealed plastic bag and then dispose of it in your household waste bin. Do not bury it or leave it exposed.

  3. Report to Authorities (Optional): If you suspect the possum died from a disease or if there are multiple dead possums in the area, you may want to report it to local authorities such as the local council, state wildlife agency, or a wildlife rescue organization. They can provide guidance on whether further action is necessary.

  4. Personal Hygiene: After handling the possum, wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water to reduce the risk of any potential contamination.
