If the animal is injured

  1. Assess the Situation: Approach the bandicoot cautiously to assess its condition. Be mindful that bandicoots can be frightened and defensive when injured, so approach slowly and calmly to avoid stressing the animal further.

  2. Ensure Safety: If the bandicoot is in a dangerous location (e.g., near a road), safely move it to a quieter and safer area nearby. Use gloves or a thick towel to handle the bandicoot to protect yourself and avoid causing further injury.

  3. Containment: If possible, gently place the injured bandicoot into a well-ventilated box or carrier lined with a soft towel or cloth. Ensure the container has enough air holes and is secure so the bandicoot cannot escape.

  4. Keep Warm and Quiet: Keep the bandicoot in a quiet, dark place away from pets, children, and noise. Use a heating pad set on low or a warm water bottle wrapped in a towel (to avoid direct contact) to keep the bandicoot warm, especially if it's cold outside.

  5. Seek Professional Help: Contact a local wildlife rescue organisation such as our team here at Kanyana Wildlife. We have the expertise and resources to provide appropriate care and treatment for the injured bandicoot.

  6. Do Not Offer Food or Water: Refrain from feeding or giving water to the injured bandicoot. It's important to leave this to trained wildlife carers who can assess its condition properly and provide suitable care.

  7. Follow Advice: Follow any advice or instructions given by the wildlife rescue organization or rehabilitator. They may ask you to transport the bandicoot to them or provide further instructions on how to care for it until help arrives.

If the animal is dead

  1. Handle with Care: Use gloves or a plastic bag to handle the bandicoot to minimize direct contact. This helps protect you from any potential diseases or parasites the bandicoot might carry.

  2. Dispose Properly: Place the dead bandicoot in a sealed plastic bag and then dispose of it in your household waste bin. Do not bury it or leave it exposed, as this could attract scavengers or spread disease.

  3. Report to Authorities (Optional): If you suspect the bandicoot died from a disease or if you notice multiple dead bandicoots in the area, you may want to report it to local authorities such as the local council, state wildlife agency, or a wildlife rescue organisation such as our team here at Kanyana Wildlife. We can provide guidance on whether further action is necessary and may want to investigate the cause of death if it appears suspicious or part of a larger issue.

  4. Personal Hygiene: After handling the bandicoot or disposing of it, wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water to reduce the risk of any potential contamination.
