Have you ever come across a Shingleback Lizard?

These unique reptiles have an interesting lifestyle - they prefer to live alone for most of the year!

Their scientific name is Tiliqua rugosa, but let’s just call them Shingleback Lizards for now.

Here’s a fun fact: Shingleback Lizards are doing well in terms of conservation, listed as "Least Concerned."

You can find these cool lizards in all sorts of habitats, from deserts to woodlands. They have quite the varied diet, munching on small invertebrates, flowers, fruit, and even fungi.

At Kanyana, we have several Shingleback Lizards with interesting stories. Yorna, for example, was brought to us after a dog attack in 1995. Despite her injuries, she recovered well but still had some eye and walking difficulties. Instead of being euthanized, Yorna became a part of our education program.

Smuggle is another interesting case—seized at Perth Airport, he arrived at Kanyana in December 2013 after a man attempted to smuggle him out of the country.

We also have Kora, who was donated by Kanyana volunteers in 2013 to join our education program.

Next time you’re at Kanyana, be sure to meet Yorna, Smuggle, Kora, and the rest of our Shingleback Lizards. They’re not just fascinating creatures; they also play an important role in educating visitors about wildlife!
