Ever met a Bilby?
These fascinating creatures are truly unique!
Here's a fun fact about Bilbies: They are excellent diggers, using their strong front limbs and long claws to excavate burrows in search of food and shelter.
Now, let's talk about their conservation status. Bilbies are classified as "Vulnerable," which means they need our help to ensure their survival.
You can find Bilbies in desert sandplains, spinifex grasslands, and Acacia shrublands, where they dine on a variety of foods like seeds, bulbs, fruits, larvae, spiders, and small animals.
At Kanyana, we're proud to have a Bilby Breeding Program. One of our retired males, Binang, plays a crucial role in educating the public about Bilbies. He regularly visits schools and other events to raise awareness about these incredible animals. Kanyana’s bilby breeding program (link to page on Bilby breeding program) was initiated in 1996 and focuses on increasing their population, through careful genetic management and collaboration, with the Bilby Studbook Keeper.
Over 150 bilbies have passed through our facility, with many released into predator-proof enclosures and suitable wild habitats, contributing to their gradual reintroduction into areas where they’ve disappeared for decades.
Next time you see Binang or any other Bilby, remember their important role in our ecosystems and the efforts needed to protect them!
