Have you ever encountered a Barn Owl?

At Kanyana, we have a special Barn Owl named Meeka. She was admitted to our hospital in May 2018 after being found by a member of the public. We believe Meeka had been previously cared for and imprinted on humans, as she was thin and not afraid of people. After consulting with raptor specialists, it was decided that Meeka wasn’t suitable for release back into the wild. Instead, she found a new purpose as part of our education team, helping to teach visitors about the wonders of Barn Owls.

These incredible birds hold an amazing record—they are the most widespread land bird on Earth!

Their scientific name is Tyto alba, but we’ll stick with calling them Barn Owls for now.

Barn Owls are listed as secure in all states of Australia, which is great news for their conservation.

You’ll find Barn Owls in a variety of open habitats, from grasslands and farmland to open woodlands. They primarily feed on small mammals, especially rodents, but will also occasionally eat small birds, reptiles, amphibians, and insects. Barn Owls have an impressive distribution, being found on every continent except Antarctica.

Next time you’re at Kanyana, be sure to meet Meeka and learn more about these incredible birds!
