BEING A KANYANA VOLUNTEER BY JESS SAWYER
I chose to start volunteering at Kanyana about a year ago, to gain some hands-on experience while taking a year off from studying zoology at university.
I work two days a week in the hospital, which may involve caring for our resident animals on site, or feeding, weighing, and cleaning up after our patients, which can include various bird species, bobtail lizards, or some small mammals.
I’m currently training to tube and syringe feed some patients that are either too young, or too sick to feed themselves. I am also a shift supervisor on one of my days in the hospital. This involves dividing the daily tasks up amongst team members, monitoring the training of new volunteers, as well as addressing any issues which may arise during the shift.
