Wild Wisdom Awaits

Explore Kanyana's Wildlife Training Courses

We run many training courses for our volunteers and the public. Upcoming volunteer training courses are published on the hospital’s notice board, and publicly available courses are advertised via Facebook.

Wildlife First Aid - Day 1 Foundations

Designed to be a comprehensive, hands-on experience, day one begins with outlining the current legislation and legalities of caring for WA wildlife and covering the principles and key points of wildlife first aid - from capture to release.

The second part of the day includes animal handling and practicals on the safe capture of wildlife.  This involves conducting physical exam assessments on injured or sick animals. Reptiles, amphibians, mammals and birds are covered in detail and our presenters can target the training to species commonly encountered by attendees. An experienced joey carer will also present a session on the fundamentals of neonatal marsupial care, including what to do (and what not to do) when you find an orphaned, sick, displaced or injured joey.

Wildlife First Aid – Day 2 Foundations

Day two builds on and consolidates learnings from day one. Focused on practical wildlife case work, we   cover specialised topics including oiled birds, handling and baby bird and raptor care. We also discuss the current guidelines around humane euthanasia and how to ethically undertake it within a field scenario. Participants then learn how to prepare different species for safe transport under a variety of scenarios, how to conduct pre- release assessments and follow release requirements for different common species.

Our team encourages any questions participants may have throughout the day, so people are able to develop their core skills, finish their foundations training and have the confidence needed to undertake wildlife first aid in their field of work.

Wildlife First Aid – Day 3 Basic Techniques

The next stage of our training builds on the skills developed while learning about the initial capture, transport, assessment and first aid of common wildlife species. We also explore commonly used  wildlife  rehabilitation  techniques. We discuss the challenges of assessing hydration in wildlife patients, and participants will practice fluid administration techniques,, including injections under the skin and oral tubing. We then cover wound management and bandaging techniques for trauma cases (this training does use cadavers for a large portion of the day, so please let the training team know if this concerns you). The creation of basic nutritional plans will be discussed, along with assist feeding options for different species and the common diseases seen in wildlife.
