Tales from the Wild

Life as a Kanyana Wildlife Volunteer

At Kanyana Wildlife, our volunteers are the heartbeat of our daily rhythm. From dawn till dusk, they dive into a tapestry of meaningful tasks, weaving together moments that make a wild difference.

Morning Routines: Feeding and caring for the animals

The day often begins with the crucial task of feeding our animals. Volunteers ensure each animal receives the appropriate diet, tailored to specific dietary needs. This not only involves preparing the food but also carefully delivering to each enclosure. As the animals enjoy their meals, our volunteers take the opportunity to check on their wellbeing, noting any signs of distress or illness.

Keeping It Clean: Enclosure Maintenance

Once the animals are fed, volunteers turn their attention to cleaning the enclosures. This essential task ensures that all residents live in a clean and hygienic environment. Volunteers meticulously clean each space, replacing bedding and sanitising areas to prevent the spread of disease and ensure the animals are comfortable.

Education and Public Engagement

Kanyana also prides itself on its public education initiatives. Volunteers play a pivotal role in educating visitors about wildlife conservation. They lead informative tours, present engaging talks, and answer questions, inspiring a new generation of wildlife enthusiasts and advocates.

Enrichment Activities: Keeping the Animals Stimulated

A key part of a volunteer’s day is dedicated to enriching the lives of the animals. This involves creating and implementing enrichment activities designed to stimulate their natural behaviours and prevent boredom. From crafting puzzles for the birds to hide-and-seek games for the mammals, these activities are crucial for the animals' mental and physical well-being.

Training the Education Animals

Another exciting aspect of volunteering at Kanyana is training the education animals. These animals often participate in our outreach programs, helping to spread the message of conservation. Volunteers work closely with them, ensuring they are comfortable with human interaction and able to perform educational demonstrations safely and effectively.

Leadership and Mentorship

Experienced volunteers also take on supervisory roles, guiding new recruits and ensuring that all tasks are completed to the highest standards. They provide training, support, and mentorship, fostering a collaborative and nurturing environment.

Scientific Research Contributions

For those interested in scientific research, Kanyana offers opportunities to contribute to ongoing studies. Volunteers might assist with data collection, monitoring animal behaviour, or even participate in rehabilitation projects that contribute valuable insights to wildlife conservation efforts.
