Breeding Hope

Championing Conservation at Kanyana Wildlife

At Kanyana, we are dedicated to the conservation of remarkable yet threatened species.

Our breeding programs aim to enhance their populations and ensure their eventual release back into the wild. Collaborating with organisations across Australia, we’re working tirelessly to safeguard these incredible animals for future generations.

Bilby Breeding Program

Bilbies, known for their distinctive long ears and soft fur, once roamed much of Australia, are now confined to remote arid regions. Habitat destruction and predation have drastically reduced their numbers.

Kanyana’s bilby breeding program was initiated in 1996 and focuses on increasing their population, through careful genetic management and collaboration, with the Bilby Studbook Keeper. Over 150 bilbies have passed through our facility, with many released into predator-proof enclosures and suitable wild habitats, contributing to their gradual reintroduction into areas where they’ve disappeared for decades.

Our Past Programs

Woylie Breeding Program

The woylie, also known as the brush-tailed bettong, was critically endangered. These small, kangaroo-like marsupials were essential to maintaining healthy ecosystems through their digging activities. Our woylie breeding program began when we discovered a sharp decline in their wild populations due to disease and predation.

By housing and breeding orphaned woylies, we successfully raised and released many back into protected areas. The program ensured genetic diversity and optimal health through meticulous management and enrichment activities.
